Learn About the 4Cs

Diamonds are evaluated based on four fundamental characteristics—known as the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat.

These criteria form the global standard for assessing a diamond’s quality, beauty, and value. Understanding them allows you to make an informed and confident decision when selecting fine jewellery.

Each element plays a distinct role, but true brilliance lies in how they work together.

Cut — The Art of Brilliance

The cut of a diamond is not defined by its shape, but by how it interacts with light.

It determines how light is reflected, refracted, and dispersed—creating the sparkle, fire, and brilliance that define a diamond’s beauty. Even a high-quality diamond can appear dull if the cut is not executed with precision.

Among all the 4Cs, cut is often considered the most important, as it has the greatest impact on a diamond’s visual performance.

Cut Grades

Ideal Cut
Perfectly proportioned to reflect the maximum amount of light, delivering exceptional brilliance and fire.

Excellent Cut
Nearly perfect, offering outstanding sparkle with balanced light performance.

Very Good Cut
Reflects most light beautifully, providing strong brilliance at a more accessible value.

Good Cut
Maintains brightness, though some light escapes—slightly reducing overall sparkle.

Fair Cut
Noticeably less brilliance due to suboptimal light reflection.

Colour — The Absence of Colour

In white diamonds, colour refers to how little colour is present.

The grading scale ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light colour). The less colour a diamond has, the more it allows light to pass through—resulting in greater brilliance and a cleaner appearance.

While diamonds can naturally occur in a range of hues, colourless diamonds remain the most sought-after for their timeless and radiant aesthetic.

Clarity — The Purity of Light

Clarity reflects the natural characteristics found within a diamond.

Even in expertly grown lab diamonds, microscopic inclusions may form during creation. The fewer these inclusions, the more freely light can travel through the stone—resulting in exceptional brilliance and fire.

At Auren, we prioritize diamonds that appear clean to the naked eye, ensuring beauty without visual distractions. For a refined balance of rarity and radiance, we recommend VS1 clarity or higher, where imperfections remain virtually invisible.

Carat — The Presence of Size

Carat measures a diamond’s weight, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams.

While carat defines physical presence, true beauty lies in proportion and craftsmanship. Larger diamonds require greater precision to maintain brilliance, balance, and symmetry.

During cutting and polishing, diamonds often lose a portion of their original weight—an intentional process that enhances light performance. At Auren, we never prioritize size at the expense of sparkle.

Our Philosophy — Balance Above All

A beautiful diamond is not defined by size alone, but by the harmony of all four characteristics.

Our approach is simple:

Choose precision over excess.

Choose brilliance over compromise.

Choose craftsmanship over shortcuts.

Every diamond we offer is selected to deliver maximum light, refined beauty, and enduring luxury—the essence of Auren.
